Choleando is an interactive installation that publicly exposes prejudice by turning spectators into participants. Drawing from Cholo and Chicha culture, it reclaims a racial slur while challenging audiences to examine their own biases.

Inspired by the phrase "forgive, but do not forget," Choleando responds to how racism in Peru is normalized, forgotten, and repeated. Rather than centering perpetrators, the installation shifts the narrative toward those who have historically been marginalized, transforming cultural identity into a source of pride instead of shame.

Research
Research examined how racism is embedded in everyday life in Peru, from politics and media to casual language. Early explorations focused on exposing these behaviors while creating an experience that encouraged reflection rather than passive observation.

Cultural references from Chicha graphics, public transportation, newspaper collages, and Peruvian iconography informed the visual language. These studies shaped the project's visual language, interaction system, and symbolism before informing the final installation.

Concepts were refined through iterative sketches, interface layouts, environmental graphics, and printed touchpoints. Every element was designed to support the visitor's journey from entering the installation to receiving their final classification.

The visual language comes together as a fully immersive installation. Environmental graphics, interactive screens, printed attendance records, posters, and spatial interventions work as one system, transforming visitors from observers into active participants.
With the system in place, the work shifts into application. Drafts and mockups explore how the patterns live across posters, merchandise, and digital spaces, testing scale, composition, and color to ensure the identity holds together across every format.
